Use of electrofishing in fish sampling and harvesting

Electrofishing is a fishing technique that is primarily used in freshwater to collect broodstock from lakes and reservoirs where other sampling or harvesting techniques cannot be used. The photos show electrofishing boats which represent a common means of this practice. Electrofishing is designed to operate on fish nervous system and hence leads to temporarily stunning of affected fish and so they can be easily netted as shown in the second photo.

Electrofishing techniques use “Direct Power” (DC) which is considered less hazardous compared to “Alternating Current” (AC). However, faulty equipment or operations in electrofishing can result in serious injury to operators or even death.

Note: We decided not to watermark the photos in order not to upset its clarity. However, we trust you will notify us if you wish to use a picture or more. This is expected and will be appreciated.
