Reproduction of black catfish, Rhamdia quelen in Uruguay – (Broodstock)

This species, Rhamdia quelen which belongs to the siluridae family is a South American catfish that is known by Black catfish in addition to other local names. The photo shows a broodstock of Black catfish in “Punta Negra” fish farm, Maldonado-Uruguay.

The sexual maturity of black catfish is reached in the first year of life particularly in males. For reproduction purpose, and when selecting the species broodstock from natural waters, it is recommended to use fish of about 3-year old with a weight of 1 kg and above.
