The giant gourami, Osphronemus goramy can be easily grown in variety of systems and on variety of feed sources. In Indonesia, giant gourami is cultured in ponds and cages. Being a herbivore, the species can be fed on soft leaves of plants as well as on pelleted feed.

Giant gourami can be bred naturally and this makes the species a good candidate to be bred by small-scale farmers.

The consumer preference and delicious taste of giant gourami as well as its high market value make up for the relatively low growth rate of the species.

Many restaurants in Indonesia serve delicious dishes of giant gourami; mainly fried or cooked.
