Actually he did not use the canoe for sometime and so the sun had had an effect on this wooden boat. The fisherman uses cotton wool and heated sheabutter to seal the cracks so that water would not get into the dam while he goes fishing. The heated sheabutter serves as an adhesive. The dark spot behind Mohammed is the fire used in heating the sheabutter.
