The three photos show of an establishment for the culture of Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerlii) that is located on \u201cDepartamento de Durazno\u201d on the Rio Negro \u201cBlack River\u201d. This facility is the most developed sturgeon farming activity in Uruguay. The target of this project is to obtain caviar. Different breeding phases are carried out in the facilities as shown in the photos. The phase of seed production and nursing lasts about 6 months and carried out in indoor facilities in the hatchery.\u00a0 Afterwards, fish are transferred and reared in floating cages for a period of about 12-18 months reaching a size that allows sexing. Sexing is done by individual laparoscopy. Only females are moved to raceways to continue their growth for another 5 years. <\/span><\/p>\n
