These photos show the only state fish hatchery for the production of common carp and black catfish in Uruguay. The hatchery is located in the north in a small village called \u201cVilla Constituci\u00f3n\u201d in \u201cDepartamento de Salto\u201d (Salto province). The mandate of the hatchery is to supply seeds of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and black catfish (Rhamdia quelen<\/em>) which is known by bagre negro to fish producers. So far, hatchery production of fingerlings is sufficient to meet the demand on both species. The hatchery belongs to the Ministry of Agriculture in Uruguay. Producers pay the cost of the 45-day old fingerlings which in general is very low. Artificial reproduction is practiced in the hatchery. The outdoor ponds are used for broodstock and for the production of fingerling while the indoor troughs and tanks are used in the early nursing of hatched larvae.<\/span><\/p>\n
