There are two main species of seaweed farmed in Tanzania:<\/span><\/p>\n

Eucheuma spinosum<\/em> \u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Kappaphycus<\/em> cottonii<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The farming of\u00a0Eucheuma\u00a0<\/em>was initiated in Tanzania in early 1989 and become popular in coastal areas as a means of income generation and\/or in rural development for the small-scale seaweed farm. The cultivation of\u00a0E. spinosum<\/em>\u00a0was more successful.\u00a0It is believed that Kappaphycus cottonii\u00a0is to be indigenous while\u00a0Eucheuma spinosum\u00a0was originally imported from the Philippines.<\/span><\/p>\n
