Artificial reproduction of African catfish

This video shows the stripping of a female of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus. This practice takes place in artificial reproduction of the species and should be followed by artificial fertilization using testes taken from a sacrificed male. We are able to see in the video the free flowing of eggs under gentle pressure over the abdomen of female which indicates the right time of ovulation. Stripping as shown in the video should stop if blood is watched mixed with eggs. At this point, the spent female is placed in a recovery facility. Weighing eggs produced after the complete stripping is a classic means to determine the gonadosomatic index (GSI) for this particular female.
