There are two main species of seaweed farmed in Tanzania:
Eucheuma spinosum and Kappaphycus cottonii
The farming of Eucheuma was initiated in Tanzania in early 1989 and become popular in coastal areas as a means of income generation and/or in rural development for the small-scale seaweed farm. The cultivation of E. spinosum was more successful. It is believed that Kappaphycus cottonii is to be indigenous while Eucheuma spinosum was originally imported from the Philippines.
