The three photos show of an establishment for the culture of Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerlii) that is located on “Departamento de Durazno” on the Rio Negro “Black River”. This facility is the most developed sturgeon farming activity in Uruguay. The target of this project is to obtain caviar. Different breeding phases are carried out in the facilities as shown in the photos. The phase of seed production and nursing lasts about 6 months and carried out in indoor facilities in the hatchery. Afterwards, fish are transferred and reared in floating cages for a period of about 12-18 months reaching a size that allows sexing. Sexing is done by individual laparoscopy. Only females are moved to raceways to continue their growth for another 5 years.
