There has been a growing interest in shrimp farming in Iran. During the time these photos were taken (year 2000), the two key farmed shrimp species were:
Indian white shrimp, Penaeus indicus which is believed the best candidate to be farmed in Khouzestan, Hormozgan and Sistan and Baluchestan provinces. The tolerance of this species to variety of farming species placed the species as the main farmed shrimp species in Iran. Green tiger shrimp, Penaeus semisulcatus has been chosen to be cultured in Bushehr and Khouzestan provinces.
Based on a more recent data, it is clear that the Indian white shrimp, Penaeus indicus and white leg shrimp, Penaeus vannamei have collectively produced 2.5% of total Iranian aquaculture production -by volume- produced from 2500 ha during 2008.
The photos show the harvesting and sorting of shrimp produced in a shrimp farm.
