A smart overwintering system for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Egypt – Video

Review: Abdel Rahman El Gamal (Founder of the website and video channel)

Realizing that Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) could be threatened during several nights in Northen delta region (e.g. Kafr El Sheikh) during winter season. During this sensitive period of time, water temperature may drop to 8 or 9 C for few hours during nights. In such systems, warming water indoors for overwintering will be a costly process. Instead, in this smart system, greenhouses are established in earthen ponds whereas plastic sheets cover the whole space of the greenhouse arches without being fixed to pond bottom. In this system, fish have the choice either to enjoy warmer temperature in the greenhouse zone during cold nights and can enjoy warmer temperature and graze for food during day time when temperature warms up. The greenhouse structure is fixed and hence, during warmer months, plastic sheets are rolled and the pond is managed properly with no obstacles except the greenhouse arches.
