Extraction of the pituitary gland of African catfish (a training tool) – Video

Video credit: Amal Magga (South Sudan)                          Description: Abdel Rahman El Gamal

This video has been taken during the Warm water fish production training course. The video shows in details how the pituitary gland was successfully allocated and extracted. You will notice how the trainees tried to clean the gland location of whatever blood associated with the operation. You may also notice that after locating and identifying the gland, careful efforts was paid in order to keep the gland un-smashed and in the same time to avoid losing the pituitary gland among the tissues which happens sometimes. Even though I have no doubt that the second attempt will be much faster and easier, the present video will be helpful to who are practicing this task for the first time. It may worth mentioning that in order for the pituitary gland to be effective in the artificial reproduction of the species, it could be taken from sexually mature male or female and this to be done just prior to the spawning season. For practical reasons, sacrificed catfish males for getting their testes, can be also a source of pituitary glands.
