Potential farming of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Uruguay

There has been some interest in tilapia aquaculture in Uruguay. In order to evaluate the potential of tilapia aquaculture under the overall conditions in Uruguay, a core from Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) was introduced from Brazil few years ago. The plan is to create lines of tilapia that cope with the overall conditions in Uruguay especially weather whereas the long winter is very cold. The importance of that is quite obvious especially and as known that -in general- is intolerant to low water temperature. Thus, and as shown in the photos, the experimentation is carried out in this research facility whereas breeding program is conducted through testing, selection and cross breeding as indicated by numbered cages. Once the target seeds of Nile tilapia with the desired characteristics are produced, disseminating and seed for commercial establishments will commence.
