The wholesale fish market in Kafr El Sheikh has been established to serve the fish trade in the governorate especially about 52% of farmed fish in Egypt is produced in Kafr El Sheikh (2009 statistics). As expected and because tilapia represented about 2/3 of total aquaculture production in 2009, tilapia is the dominant group of fish in the market. Smaller quantities of other species whether belong to capture fishery or from aquaculture. Auctioning is the system practiced in the market whereas 3% is deducted from the sale transaction for providing the market service. Fish traded in this market is sold either locally in Kafr El Sheikh, in nearby governorates or in large cities such as Cairo, Alexandria or anywhere in Egypt based on demand whether for fish in general or for particular species.
