Use of wetland treated water in aquaponic system using fish culture in Jordan (in Arabic)

General features of aquaculture dvelopment in Jordan

Credit: Ebraheem al Zubidue (Jordan)

Water scarcity in Jordan necessitates the adoption of intensive aquaculture practices which  are carried out in cement or fiberglass tanks are used and whereas aeration using various types of aerators while liquid oxygen is used in a project.  Aquaculture production in Jordan (about 450 tons) is composed of tilapia and carps. In order to protect tilapia against cold weather during winter, aquaculture projects especially for tilapia are carried out under green houses. Wells and springs are the only water sources for aquaculture in Jordan. Most fish farms in Jordan are located in Jordan Valley then after in  Zarqa governorate, North Governorates and finally in Balqa governorate.

Establishment of a fish farming project in Andra Pradesh (India)

This project proposal addresses the establishment of fish farm in earthen ponds in Andra Pradesh region in India. The annual production capacity of the farm is 90 tons of fish. Selected species for the project are Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cyprinus carpio. The project proposal inculded the rationality of the project and the justification of selecting Andra Pradesh for establishing the project. Technical and project budgeting as well as project layout have been covered in this project proposal. This project proposal has been developed by a team of trainees who participated in Fish Culture Development training course in 2006. This course is annually hosted by the Egyptian International Centre for Agriculture (EICA). This project has been implemented under the supervision of Dr. Abdel Rahman El Gamal.

Gravel filter in earthen fish pond (Egypt)

Mechanisms used in filtering water will depend on potential usage of water. This photo shows a type of gravel filters whereas filtered water is used in tilapia hatchery as well as for landscaping. This filter is located in 1000-m2 earthen pond. The filter is established above concrete base. The outer dimension of the filter is 10×10 meter. Filtering body is one-meter wide. Gravel used in this filter is used in construction of a local known name “pheno” that is suppose to have an average size of one centimeter as the length of gravel. The depth of the filter is 1.25 meter. The filter require periodical maintenance where filter gravels are taken out, washed  while overturning it before stocking it back. This operation takes place twice/year and done to match particular activities such as tilapia spawning. Supplemental structures such as current breakers could be placed ahead of the filter which would help in settling suspended particles and enhance the efficiency of the filter. Also, the reading of water transparency using a Secchi disc when carried out in filtered water (in the middle of the filter) would tell about the filter efficiency and indicate whether maintenance of the filter would be required or not. It needs to be noted that water movement inside the filter would depend on the discharge of filtered water which takes is pumped from the middle of the filter. This particular filter is located on the premises of World Fish Center, Abbassa, Egypt.

Fish harvesting facilities in earthen ponds (harvest ditch) in Egypt

Fish harvest in earthen ponds is significantly facilitated by establishing harvest ditches. In addition to facilitating fish harvest, ditches help in drying pond bottom. Depending on pond size and the slope of pond bottom, placing harvest ditches are determined. Ditches could be peripheral especially in large ponds or central in smaller ponds. Establishing harvest ditches is not recommended if water table is high otherwise unfavorable situations which will result in difficulty in drying pond bottom.

Fish harvesting facilities in earthen ponds (catch pond) in Egypt

Fish harvesting in earthen ponds especially in large ponds is a significant task. Catch ponds are recommended to carry out efficient fish harvesting. For a 4-ha fish pond, a catch pond of the following dimensions will be sufficient; 2.5 m high, 10-m long, and 2-m wide. Catch pond should have a rocky bottom and sides. The bottom of catch pond is 80-cm below fish pond bottom. In order for this method to be effective in attracting pond fishes to enter the catch pond, water is introduced to fish pond through catch pond at a rate of 20-40 m3/hour. This particular catch pond serves 2-3 production ponds; 6-ha each.

Overwintering facility for gilthead seabream and European seabass (Italy)

Gilthead seabream (Sparus auratus) and European seabass (Dicentrachus labrachus) although can relatively tolerate low temperature, but cannot survive severe cold which could be encountered in Europe during winter and hence overwintering facilities may be required. The photo shows a high curtain surrounding the earthen pond where fish are overwintered. The curtains can be managed (folded or stretched) according to the direction of prevailing winds. In this particular farm in Italy, underground water from deep wells (warm) has been supplied to the pond during the extreme cold weather.
