Isale fish station (Burundi)

Credit: Alain Murekambanze (Burundi)

This photo is for the Isale Fish station , located in bujumbura province, Burundi). The station contains 10 earthen ponds in total in which Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus is farmed. Fertilization is done by chiken manure produced in chicken houses as seen in the photo. African catfish, Clarias gariepinus has been introduced  in some of the ponds to help controlling the unwanted reproduction of tilapia. Thes station belongs to the Nationl Center for Aquaculture Development (CNDAPA) of the Ministery of Agriculture and Livestock, Burundi.

Note: We decided not to watermark the photos in order not to upset its clarity. However, we trust you will notify us if you wish to use a picture or more. This is expected and will be appreciated.

Selective breeding in fish

The 3-slide bite introduces the concept of fish selection in addition to the additive genetic variance VA. The illustrations included show the selection process over several generations and how means of selected populations move rightward till the selection plateau is reached.

Selection and sexual dimorphism in fish

This single slide began with the definition of sexual dimorphism and the importance of the phenomenon in selection programs. The illustrations as represented in natural distribution for two sexes of a given species demonstrating the necessity of having independent cut-off values for each sex otherwise a particular sex could dominate selected population.

Response to selection and selection intensity in fish

This single illustrated slide shows a normal distribution of a population and demonstrates the relationship between the response to selection and the selection differential that is directly related to selection intensity. The concerns about possible impact of small selected portion on inbreeding has been highlighted.

Qualitative genetics in fish

This 2-slide bite defines the qualitative genetics in fish and its inheritence focusing on some examples in ornamental fish as well as in aquaculture as well as highlighting the nil influence of environment on the qualitative traits.

Fish selection (trend and plateau)

This information bite illustrates the accumulated gain over generations through selection. The bite also describes the factors that influence the response to selection which are namely heritability coefficient and selection differential. The illustration shows the declining gain (response to selection) till reaching the plateau whereas no gain could be achieved unless variation is created naturally or artificially.

Genetic Environment Interaction (GxE) in Fish

This illustrated bite shows how the growth rate of two strains of a given species when grown in two different farming environments. The examples of the “No GxE) as well as the existence of the GxE has been illustrated. The two experimental environments are defined. The bite emphasized that these information should result of well designed experiment and the data should be statistically analyzed before determining whether there is interaction between the genetics and environment or no.

Incubating the embryos of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Video)

This video shows a hatchery of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus. Artificial reproduction of African catfish is now carried out at commercial level in several hatcheries in Egypt. The video shows the incubators of catfish embryos whereas water is supplied from the bottom and drains from screened windows near the top of the incubators.

Fouling of tilapia cages in Rayaan Depressions, Fayoum, Egypt (Video)

The video which has been taken in Rayaan Depression in Fayoum, Egypt. Cage farming has been banned in River Nile while some cages have been licensed for practicing in Rayaan depression for Nile tilapia farming. The video shows several piles of fouling aquatic plants. The periodic maintenance of cages is necessary in order to maintain adequate water exchange and oxygenation as required by fish biomass in the cages.
