Mass culture of phytoplankton in Trat coastal fisheries research and development center (Thailand)

Species of phytoplankton are Chlorella sp., Skeletonema sp., Chaetoceros sp. and Tetraselmis sp. Algal culture is carried out in 25-ton tanks which are far from rotifer culture area in order to protect rotifer from contamination. Culture condition: salinity 25 ppt, temperature 22 – 28 oC, aeration all day. Period of culture is 3 days, harvest 70% of tank and then add seawater and fertilizer and after 3 days, harvest all.

Spotted Babylon (Babylonia areolata) hatchery at Trat Coastal Fisheries Research and Development Center (Thailand)

This Spotted Babylon hatchery uses closed water system which is divided into rearing pond, sediment pond, biological filter, sea weed pond  (to reduce water nitrate using the sea weed, Ulva sp.), and finally protein skimmer to reduce protein residual in the water before pumping it back to the rearing pond. In general, spotted Babylon enjoys good farm gate price.

Small-scale aquaculture in rural development

This presentation addresses the role of small-scale in rural development. The features of rural communities and the criteria of small-sacle projects in several countries were included. Models of small-scale aquaculure whether as a sole activity such as cages or when integrated with other agricultural systems such as rice, ducks and chicken have been included. lessons to be learnt on case studies in some countries have been included in the presentation. Issues of concern are covered including accessibility to credit, sustainability of small-scale projects as well as subsidy types have been covered. Also success indicators are included in this presentation.
