Women in subsistence fishery in Fiji

The inserted picture was taken (as captioned), in Lau, Fiji, and shows a common fishing practice by women who use tidal changes to capture fish in pools using gillnets.

Women contribute significantly to the subsistence and artisanal fisheries in Fiji. Traditionally, women’s catch is first used to supply family and friends with food, and then any surplus is marketed. In coastal villages, many of the women are engaged on a part time basis in shoreline or tidal pool fishing. They used to use scoop nets and hand nets in conjunction with poisoning fish in the tidal pools. However, poising is no longer occurs due the national ban on the use of poison starting in 1996.

On-board fish drying in India

The inserted picture shows the fish drying on a fishing vessel in India.

Drying fish onboard is becoming popular in India and could be also practiced elsewhere. The dried fish produced in this way is much cleaner and devoid of unwanted materials compared to land drying. Moreover, this method of drying utilizes effectively the available space on the boat such as above the cabin. This in addition to saving the cost of ice which could be used to keep the freshness of caught fish. Typically, the fishes that are to be dried onboard are arranged in rows and then hung on the deck for drying. In general, because of the mentioned advantages, on-board fish drying has become popular method.

Upon reaching the shore, dried fish is packed and marketed whether in local markets while hygienically and well packed dried fish are in the supermarkets in India as well as exported to other countries.

Sea urchin fishery and trade in Chile

Sea urchin in market in Chile

The inserted picture shows the cleaning of sea urchin

Chile’s sea urchin fishery ranges between about 40,000 – 60,000 tons/year which is by far the largest in the world and contributing by more than 50% of the global urchin production.

Sea urchin is fished through artisanal fishers and by divers. Fishermen may sell their daily catch into local markets for the tourist or other small scale specialist trade while some dive operations especially in the northern area may sell a part of their catch to large processors. Divers could work independently or employed by a processing company such as in the southern parts of Chile. In local markets, sea urchin is sold either fresh or frozen whereas prices are often set per dozen. It worth mentioning, that most of the Chilean urchin production especially from industrial operations is exported frozen to Japan.

It may be of interest to know that the minimum legal size limit for sea urchins in Chile is 70 mm test diameter (TD) as this size provides assurance that the urchins will have a chance to spawn at least once or twice before being caught. In addition to the size limit, there are other fishery management regulations related to sea urchin that target to protect the reproductive capacities of the stocks; these include closed seasons, fixed quotas, limiting the entry of divers, and others.

Traditional shrimp smoking in India

Review: Abdel Rahman El Gamal (Founder of the website)

Shrimp smoking in India

Smoked fish/shrimp has a good demand in India. Several fish species are used for smoking with mullets and shrimp being the preferred species. The inserted picture shows the traditional method for shrimp smoking.

These traditional kilns are mainly made of mud plastered walls on a skeleton of mangrove wood and bamboo poles. Sun dried shrimp are spread on raised bamboo mats whereas the two to three fire pits below the platform allow slow cooking of shrimp at a temperature of around 45-50 C.

As shrimp cooks and its size reduces, a space is made for fresh batch of shrimp and hence ensuring continuous processing. In general, time required for shrimp smoking is shorter than fish. The fully smoked shrimp is packed in sacks or baskets and taken to markets. Usually, women are in charge of the smoking process.

The traditional method of fish/shrimp smoking has been perfected over the years, especially in the light of the minimum capital costs and the use of locally available materials such as mangrove wood, bamboo poles, coconut husk. However, because women may suffer from burns in the hands and feet as well as breathing and eye problems, the promotion of advanced fish smoking practices will be most likely adopted.

Thanks to Mom Dove for trusting us

Day: 8 June, 2016

Nesting dove in my home

We understand you do not have facebook account. You established your nest and laid your eggs outside the window of our kitchen while we were in a short vacation in the Red Sea region (18-22 May). We discovered that upon our return. Since then we did all our best to act quietly in the kitchen area and we promise to continue to be like that until you leave. From your side, you were smart enough to get acquainted with the unavoidable noise of kitchen machines and microwave. As the time goes, you allowed my wife to slightly slide about 10 cm of the kitchen window. Before I forget, we should congratulate you for you newly hatched babies. This means you are going to fly days/weeks from today. Thanks for allowing me to photograph and film you throughout the whole period. We know that there were two incidences of misunderstanding, we were trying to be better hosts and we never meant to bother you and your babies. We feel happy you continue to feel secure in our kitchen premise. It seems we are going to miss you in days or weeks from now. I really admire and respect your dedication throughout the past three weeks during which you showed outstanding level of maternal care. From my side, we will always remember you through publishing a film about the whole story. For the moment, hope you continue enjoying your stay and hope you remember your nest here and you may come back. Who knows?
