Use of locally-made demand feeders in fish ponds in Benin – Video

Credit for the video: Ismael Radwan (Egypt)     Description: Abdel Rahman El Gamal

The video shows a locally made demand feeder used in an earthen pond in Benin. The feeder has a handle that allows pulling the feeder towards the pond dike for checking and filling before pushing it back to the feeding area in tilapia pond and hence there is no need for establishing a walkway. The length of the handle will determine the distance of the feeder from the pond dike.

Local pressed feed for tilapia in Benin

Credit: Ismael Radwan (Egypt)

The photo shows the end product of pressed feed that is locally made on fish farm and in which meat grinder is used in pressing the feed ingredients. As expected, the diameter of produced feed will depend on the diameter of dye used. Also, the water stability for such feed is expected to be low and some management approaches could be followed to address this problem; including frequent feeding and use of feeding trays which could be inspected periodically to determine the mode of feed consumption and hence avoid feed loss.

Features of fish farming in Benin (facilities and species)

Credit: Ismael Radwan (Egypt)

The four photos show types of fish farming facilities that are commonly found in Benin. Earthen ponds are commonly found as represented by the farm photo which utilizes a modest water flow throughout the year.  The farm of concrete tanks is located in Torri Posseto province. Hapas are also used whether for fry nursing or for holding tilapia broodstock prior to the spawning season. Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus is the main farmed species in Benin whereas its market size of tilapia is about 250 g. Also, African catfish, Clarias gariepinus is farmed in Benin.

Establishment of Sharhabeel Ben Hasna Tilapia Training Farm in Jordan

This project proposal has been developed by a group of two who participated in the Fish Culture Development training course in 2013. The project document was developed under the supervision of Dr. Abdel Rahman El Gamal. The main focus of this project proposal is to develop a tilapia training center at Dier Alla, Jordan. The objectives of the project targeted to enhance fish production in Jordan through training of farmers who can grow tilapia in addition to their agricultural crops. This in addition to providing a model of integrated system that could be disseminated further at different scales of production. The project document included the project budget as well as the economic analysis using the standard parameters.

Grading of tilapia fry prior to hormonal sex reversal treatment in Benin

Credit: Ismael Radwan (Egypt)

As established, the effectiveness of sex reversal process depends on several factors including the initial size (age) of treated fry. If the tilapia spawning and collection systems of the fry cannot guarantee the optimum size (age) of tilapia fry, a grading system will be required. The photo shows a simple grader which sorts the sizes of collected tilapia. The diameter of this grader is 2.5 mm whereas passed through tilapia fry are taken for sex reversal process while retained fry could be used in different farming systems.

Integrated fish and poultry in Benin

Credit: Ismael Radwan (Egypt)

The photos show the integration between fish and poultry as carried out in earthen ponds in Benin. Broilers and rabbits are the main poultry in such integrated system while tilapia is the main fish species. Poultry house are established above the water surface in fish ponds providing daily fertilization as required by farmed fish. As expected, a safe ratio between the number of broilers or rabbits should be maintained. The dropping of rabbits -in particular- is has been ideal when used in the production of maggots that is required for the feeding of African catfish.

Use of algae in tilapia feeding in Benin

Credit: Ismael Radwan (Egypt)

The photos show the bloom and collection of algae from a body of water. This algae species is well accepted by tilapia in addition to its adequate nutritional value. The algae are offered to tilapia in its original shape (unprocessed). This type of algae is characterized by its fast growth and hence could contribute significantly to tilapia feeding in Benin.

Nursing and grow-out of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus in a small-scale farm in Senegal

Credit: Lo Oumy Seck (Senegal)

This photo shows a governmental fish farm that belongs to the Department of Saint Louis and located in Gniling Mbaw village. The farm consists of circular fiberglass tanks for the nursing of the fry of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus while the concrete tanks that appear in the back are used for grow-out. This small-scale system has been established by specialized technicians according to Thai cooperation. Fish feed used in this farm is either prepared on the farm or acquired from the local market.

Seed production of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus in Senegal

Credit: Lo Oumy Seck (Senegal)

The photo shows the only hatchery for Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus in Senegal. This hatchery is governmental and located in Région de Saint-Louis, département de Richard-Toll. According to the most recent statistics, 880,000 tilapia fry were produced in this hatchery to meet the demand of private and governmental fish farms. It may worth mentioning, no sex reversal of tilapia fry using hormones is done in the hatchery. Even though, this is the only hatchery at the moment, the establishing of a new hatchery is on the agenda and will be implemented soon.
