Traditional and emerging aquaculture methods have been addressed. Fishery Resources Training Course (2011)

Dr. Abdel Rahman El Gamal has recently delivered two lectures in “Fishery Resources” training course which is organized by the Egyptian International Center for Agriculture (EICA). The course is designed for trainees from the Nile Valley countries and lasts from 11-29 September, 2011. This course hosts 12 participants from Chad, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Liberia, Niger Republic, Uganda and Zambia.

Adapting to climate change: the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries and Aquaculture in the Near East and North Africa Region

This workshop proceedings is the product of a 3-day workshop which was held at Abbassa (Egypt) in December 2009 with the Near East Member Countries and enriched by reviews as well as contributions by FAO and World Fish experts. The objectives of the workshop included creating awareness among Member Countries and stakeholders of the need for the ecosystem approach to fisheries and aquaculture and of its implementation on the basis of the best available knowledge and information; strengthening of capacity for planning and implementation of the ecosystem approach to fisheries and aquaculture; improving knowledge and awareness of the current and future implications of climate change for fisheries and aquaculture; and providing guidance on best practices for adaptive planning and management, and adaptive strategies in general, for coping with climate change.

Review of Aquaculture Training for the Period 1999 – 2009 – World Fish Center

This worldFish Center publication has been written by Dr. Abdel Rahman El Gamal who managed the outreach program including training during his service in the World Fish Center. This publication cover eleven years from 1999 – 2009. In addition to the statistics of trainingg courses and so trainees whether in local, regional or international courses, the document addressed and analyized training-related issues including the development of training needs, the steadily increase in female participation in the training programs conducted at the World Fish facilities at Abbassa, Egypt. The partnerships with other agencies has been presented in this document. The text, pictures and graphs presented various activities of training activities during the 11 years whereas trainees from 98 countries have participated in this program.

Applications of Genetics in Aquaculture and Fisheries Practices

The presentation addresses mainly the application side of aquaculture practices. Before addressing genetic enhancement approaches, key genetic parameters are briefed. The management of brood stocks in fish hatcheries and selective programs are focused upon in the presentation.  Also, advanced genetic technologies such as ploidy induction and genetic manipulations are covered in this presentation. In regard to the genetic application in fishery management, the genetic considerations in stock enhancement programs are addressed.

Warm Water Fish Production Training Course (2011)

The technical session of the 110-day “Warm Water Fish Production” training course started in Cairo on Sunday 08 May, 2011. This course is supported by the Egyptian International Center for Agriculture (EICA) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The participants in the course are from Cameroon, Gabon, Ghana, Malawi, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. Dr. El Gamal is contributing by several lectures in this course whereas this picture has been taken upon delivering the first lecture on May 8, 2011. The second picture with course participants was taken during the course.
