This lecture has been delivered by Dr. Abdel Rahman El Gamal during July 2016 as a contribution to the “Fish Culture Development training course – Africa” which is annually organized by the Egyptian International Centre for Agriculture (EICA) with the support by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The lecture focused more on the management issue rather than specific technologies for particular species. The introductory part of the lecture highlighted the significant diversity of aquatic organisms related to reproduction whereas this introduction served the subsequent components of the lecture.
The necessity and roles of hatcheries in the development of aquaculture has been addressed whether for fin fish or shellfish. The broodstock management, standards of key parameters, and spawning induction have been covered in the lecture that ended by the enhancement of hatchery’s efficiency.

The two inserted pictures show a routine activity carried out by Fisheries Department towards the enforcement of fishing regulations. Whenever a fishing violation is spotted, the illegal fishing gears are seized and destroyed such as by burning as shown in the picture. Those individuals who committed the fishing violations are subjected to an imprisonment for a year or two. The most common fishing violations are the use of prohibited nets for catching illegal fish sizes. The photos’ collection shows the event of destroying gears was done in public and witnessed -according to people’s uniforms- by fishery officials, police and media. The violators also witnessed the burning of their illegal gears. The violation took place in Lake Tanganyika.

Review: Abdel Rahman El Gamal (Founder of the video channel)

The farm shown in the video is located in Malela Mukuranga (Said Farm). The birds shown in this video have been brought from a private farm. African catfish and Nile tilapia are the two species grown in the pond. In addition to the natural food that is stimulated by the dropping of geese, fish receive supplemental feed which is the same feed provided to the geese. In general, geese are primarily herbivores and usually eat tender grasses and plant materials, such as roots, leaves, stems and sprouts. Farm-raised geese may eat wheat, rice corn and feed pellets.
It worth mentioning that the culture of geese integrated with fish farming has been practiced on a very limited/trial scale in East European countries and in some Asian countries. The same is true for trying this type of integration in Africa such as in Madagascar and Tanzania where this video has been filmed. In general, the stocking density of geese and the live weight production vary significantly between such initiatives of integration.

Fisher folk along the Volta Lake by means of survival use the bamboo sticks to set traps for catching fish. The fisher folks put the bamboos together and form rafts with them. They serve as fish aggregating device (FADs). The bamboos trap the egg laying fishes and cuts short the reproduction cycle in the lake. Moreover, small fishes get also trapped before further growth and maturation.

The lecture started with the features of rural community focusing more on aquaculture including criteria of fish candidates which may suit the rural communities. The part on the promotion of small-scale aquaculture began with the adoption curve and the importance of initial success and requirements especially of extension service. The subsidy issue has been addressed along with case studies along with the conflicting opinions. The advantage of participatory approach in the planning has been applied. The lecture also addressed the obstacles facing the development of small-scale aquaculture such as the credit. Examples of small-scale aquaculture, integrated systems and case studies from various parts of the world have been included in the lecture.
