Reproduction of African catfish in Burundi (in French) – a 27-min movie

The movie has been developed and owned by Kunagura Ubworozi (Burundi). This 27-minute movie includes the handling of African catfish broodstock, checking the sexual maturation, extraction of pituitary gland, adminstration of the pituitary gland extract, and the ovulation of female broodstock. The movie also presents the sacrificing of catfish male, testes of catfish male and carry out the artificial fertilization. The movie ended by the incubation of fertilized eggs till hatching and early nursing of catfish larvae.

Hen houses and fish ponds in Kavogero fish farming station, Kirundo province (Burundi)

This photo was taken in Kavogero fish farming station, Kirundo province, Burundi  just after the rehabilitation of the station as seen in the color of unfertilized pond water. There are 2 henhouses above fish ponds. The station has nine ponds whereas Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) are farmed.

Harvesting and sexing of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) broodstock (Egypt) – Video

This video presents the harvesting and sexing grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) broodstock prior to the artificial spawning of grass carp. Since mid 1990s, the use of herbicides in the River Nile and irrigation canals has been banned in Egypt. Instead, grass carp has been used as the biological control agent for aquatic plants. This video has been taken in the facility of a governmental hatchery located in the Barrage, Egypt. Male grass carp brood fish is identified by the roughness of the underside of its pectoral fin.

The integration between laying hens and aquaculture in Burundi

This photos shows a hen house  over a fish pond at Isale fish farming  station. In total there are three hen houses  over fish ponds in which laying hens are holds. Hens manure and a part of poultry feed which falls on the floor of the poultry house are considered the source of fish nutrition in the fish pond located underneath the poultry house.

Harvesting of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus from Busa Dam, Ghana

This photo shows the harvesting of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus from the Busa dam with a surface area of 5.0 ha in the Wa Municipal district of the Upper West Region, Ghana, from cages. This is the first cage to be mounted in the three Northern Region under the Food Security and Environment Facility Project facilitated by the Ministry of Local Government and funded by CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency). The project was carried out by a private enterprise Zoomlion Ghana Ltd and the main object was to increase the nutritional level of the community, provide some income, it was a community project. Five cages with a total surface area of 318 m³  were mounted in this dam.

A fish smoker (Chorkor) in Burundi

This photo shows a “chorkor” oven which got its name from a fishing village and a neighborhood in the city of Accra, part of the Accra Metropolitan Area, Ghana.  Chorkor This oven is used to smoke different species of fish.
