Enforcing fishery regulations in Zambia

A Department of Fisheries officer displays fish that was caught during the closed fishing season. It is illegal to be found in fishing or in possession of fish during this period which runs from 1st of December to 28th of February in the following year. The fish and fishing gears are then destroyed by the courts of law. Persons found wanting are either fined or sentenced to simple imprisonment or both.

Culture of oysters (Crassostrea belchiri) using cement and long line methods in Thailand

The two photos show two methods of oyster farming that are namely cement and long line methods. The  3-4 cm; (3-4 months age)  Crassostrea belcheri  oysters are either stick on a cement  pole or stick on a rope using cement and then after, they are placed in the chosen rearing ground in natural waters. The harvesting takes place after 7-8 months whereas the average size reaches about 10-15 cm. Restaurants represent the principal market for the harvested oysters while small quantities are marketed in local fish markets..

Rice field irrigated by water discharge of Rwojya dam in Rwanda

This rice field shown in the photo receives its water from a dam  (Rwojya) located in Kirehe. The government stocks the dam with tilapia. The fishermen operating in this dam are the owners of the land used in dam construction. Rice fields receive the fertile water from Rwojya dam and hence enhance rice productivity as well as production economics. There are two cooperatives involved; the first is for fishermen while the second is for rice farmers.

Fish harvest of Lake Cyohoha, Rwanda

The photo shows the fish harvest of Lake Cyohoha, Bugesera, Rwanda. The lake is being stocked with tilapia under the supervision of the governmental fishery agency. This day of fish harvest takes place six months after stocking and fishery closing. The people appear in the photo are the community members who came to watch the harvest and in the same time buy their requirements of fish.

Marketing of dried snake skin gourami, Trichogaster pectoralis in Thailand

The photo shows the market display of snake skin gourami (Trichogaster pectoralis) in a Thai fish market. The freshwater species enjoys a high consumer preference in its salted-dried form. Drying is often carried out as sun-drying while some producers use hot air drying. Aquaculture is the only source of this species. Market price is 150-200 baht/kg (5-8 US$) based on fish size as well as the moisture content of dried product.

On-farm demonstration on fish pond fertilization in Zambia

The photo shows an extension officer from the Department of Fisheries with a group of fish farmers. This was during one of the on-farm practical demonstrations on pond fertilization and plankton bloom. The officer is demonstrating the use of a secchi disc to indicate the bloom in earthen ponds.

This is an example of fish processing technology being exhibited at the Agriculture and Commercial Show. The processing technology is a kiln where fish is smoked. Agriculture and commercial shows are events where farmers, Government and other stakeholders interact.

This 3-slide bite addresses the field testing of ammonia in fish ponds and describe how the analysis can be reliable and reasonably accurate. The sampling procedures are covered in this illustrated bite. Moreover, the bite addresses incidences of questionable reasons and means of validating the results.
