The two photos show the workers while are pouring the whiteleg shrimp (Liptopenaeus vannamei) into an iced bath. This practice is necessary after harvesting and before grading. While the ice bath is shocking harvested shrimp, it will lead to preserving the meat quality of shrimp and extending its shelf life.

The photo shows a compost crib in the shallow corner of an earthen fish pond. The crib could be built with bamboo or wooden poles. It is recommended that for a 1000-m2 pond the radius of the crib should be about 1 m. The compost material is put inside the crib up to the water line and should be packed down well. In order to facilitate adequate aeration and hence aerobic conditions, the compost pile should be ‘turned over’ periodically. Also, in order to keep the desired plankton bloom in fish ponds, fresh batches of compost are added periodically.

The photo shows the aeration of a shrimp earthen pond using paddle wheels. The power of aerators (in horse power) and its positioning is important not only for providing sufficient air and so oxygen to farmed shrimp but also to create water circulation that direct pond sediments to settle in the center of the pond.

The photo shows the Sesama crab (or sesame crab) hatchery in Coastal Aquaculture Development and Research Center, Suratthani, Thailand. In this facility, hatching and larval nursing of Sesame crab is taking place for selling to farmers as well as for releasing into the nature.
In the wild, the sesame crabs are the dominant crab in mangroves. These crabs are capable to successfully live in extreme environments. This is attributed to their ability to feed on wide range of food stuff as well as their ability to recirculate deoxygenated water and aerate it before directing it into their gill chamber.
