Fish Preservation through smoking and sun-drying in Nepal

Credit: Deepak Bhusal (Nepal)

Sometime fishermen capture fish in quantities beyond what could be marketed in fresh form. In order to preserve extra fish from spoilage, smoking and sun-drying are the methods practiced whereas fishermen used to smoke fish in the fishing spot. Generally, such methods of preservation apply to high value and big fishes such as Bagarius yarrelli, Tor putitora, Neolissocheilus hexagonolepis, Chagunius chagunio. It worth mentioning the dried fish represents about 25% of fish catch. Also, higher prices are given to dried fish.

Local and regional trade of Ugandan fish (Arua town fish market)

Credit:  Enima Chris (Uganda)

This picture shows fish selling in Arua Town Market on modest facilities. This market which is the biggest fish market in the region was constructed long time and hence requires renovation. Most of the traded fish finally is transported to Democratic Republic of Congo and the South Sudan which are very big regional markets for Ugandan fish. However, because the volume of landed fish has declined, the promotion of aquaculture will be necessary in order to meet the growing fish demand.
