Reproduction of black catfish, Rhamdia quelen in Uruguay – (Broodstock)

This species, Rhamdia quelen which belongs to the siluridae family is a South American catfish that is known by Black catfish in addition to other local names. The photo shows a broodstock of Black catfish in “Punta Negra” fish farm, Maldonado-Uruguay.

The sexual maturity of black catfish is reached in the first year of life particularly in males. For reproduction purpose, and when selecting the species broodstock from natural waters, it is recommended to use fish of about 3-year old with a weight of 1 kg and above.

Establishment of a private fish hatchery for Nile tilapia and African catfish in Mparambo, Burundi

This project has been developed by a group of trainees who participated during 2012 in the Warm Water Fish Production training course which is hosted by the Egyptian International Centre for Agriculture (EICA) in partnership with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The proposed location of this project is Mparambo, Burundi. The project components include the its , chosen species (Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niliticus) and African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) production technology and the design and layout of the project. The cost (fixed and operation), and estimated revenue are addressed. The marketing of hatchery fingerlings and promotion strategy are included. The project document addressed the possible environmental impact assessment and mitigation measures. The sustainability of the project has been also addressed. The document includes supporting diagrams. This project is one of more group projects which have been supervised by Dr. Abdel Rahman El Gamal.

Preparing Prahok fish product in Cambodia

The photo shows women who living in and around the Tonle Sap Great Lake in Cambodia are enjoying in preparing fish paste-PRAHOK- for their families. Prahok which is a famous type of preserved fish in Cambodia is characterized by its strong and distinct flavor and can be eaten cooked or fried usually with rice. Prahok is considered important food stuff in the countryside or poor regions especially when fresh fish is in short supply.

Liming of fish ponds in Malawi

Artisanal unit for red tilapia rearing in Colombia

This photo shows a unit for red tilapia rearing in the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta (CGSM). The unit is built from wood and includes nursery cages as well as first and second phase of grow-out for red tilapia. The CGSM is a coastal lagoon located in northern Colombia that is characterized by a highly productive estuarine system.

Lighting for zooplankton during nursery and fattening stages of red tilapia in Colombia

As shown in the photo, artisan lamps are used at night in order to keep the zooplankton on the surface, thereby taking advantage of the productivity of the medium while using less artificial feed during the first and second phase grow-out of red tilapia.

Mariculture development in Gazi Bay, Kenya

This document addresses the development of mariculture Gazi Bay, Kenya. The description of the project location is addressed as well as the rationality of the project from social and ecological dimensions. The photos describe the various phases of the project starting by the site selection and ending by the completion of fish pond. Milk fish (Chanos chanos) has been found to be the species of choice for this projects which places high priority on local fish consumption.

Women training on fish salting and sun-drying in Sao Tome (Video)

Women training in Sao Tome 2This video which was donated to the site by its copyright holder was taken during a training session that was designed for women in a fishing community in Sao Tome. The video begins with fishermen and their landed fishing. The scene till the end of the video was led by women trainees and the practical training on fish processing practices. It is obvious that salting followed by sun-drying represent a practical means of fish preservation in the fishing community. The program highlighted the hygienic side of salting whereas fish washing and cleaning was emphasized and also cuts were made in fish tissue.
