Harvesting and sorting of green tiger shrimp, Penaeus semisulcatus in Egypt

Review: Abdel Rahman El Gamal (Founder of the website and video channel)

The photos show the harvest of green tiger shrimp, Penaeus semisulcatus in a shrimp farm of earthen ponds in Egypt. The harvesting as shown in the photos is carried out during night as shown in the electric lamps which are placed in a proper position to attract shrimp which are dragged by water current towards the light and enter a netting structure where they are scooped and processed. The photos also show the sorting of harvested shrimp into size grades based on the pricing system of different grades of shrimp. When complete draining is the harvesting method of burrowing shrimps such as green tiger shrimp, the steadily flow of water upon draining should be maintained because if the water flow is repeatedly interrupted, the shrimp may tend to resettle in the mud and may be missed in the harvest.

The photos shown are related to the reproduction of rainbow trout, in Peru. The reproduction process includes the selection of broodstock, egg stripping from female and then mixing the sperm collected from males in the fertilization process before incubating fertilized eggs until hatching.

Cage farming of red tilapia in Peru

Credit: Carlos Calderón Deza Via: Wilder Rodriguez Arteaga (Peru)

This photo shows cage farming of red tilapia in Peru during either fry nursing or fattening. During fry nursing, balanced feed of 30 and 45% protein content is offered at 10-12% of fish biomass/day. During the fattening phase, fish are stocked at densities that range from 80 – 120 individuals/m3 and fed commercial feed of 30 or 32 % protein at 6% of fish biomass/day during the early fattening and reduced to 3% of fish biomass/day during the late fattening. As usual, floating extruded feed is used in cage farming.

Cesenatico Port Canal (Italy)

Note: This photo dates back to 2002.

The origin of Cesenatico which lies on the east coast of Italy dates back to 1302, when the harbor was dug and the fortress was built in order to defend it.

In 1502, Leonardo da Vinci designed the Canal Harbor. During the XIX century, fishing became the main activity in Cesenatico whereas the fishing boats “bragozzi” were shown joining the fishermen who came from Chioggia. The town of Cesenatico with the fishermen’s houses developed around the Port Canal.

The maritime museum with its historical boats is located in the oldest part of the Canal Harbor.

Dried puffer fish in a souvenir open market in Alexandria, Egypt

Puffers which belong to the family Tetraodontidae are also called blowfish, globefish, bubblefish, and others.

Because puffer fish are highly poisonous fish, offering these fish for human consumption is very rare and after a special preparation by experienced people who are familiar with removing the poisonous organ before its consumption. However, this poisonous fish turn into attractive souvenir when dead fish is processed and dried. In fact, puffers may be threatened as a result of over-fishing to meet the demands of the tourist industry.

The drying of the puffer includes the removal of the entrails of the specimen. In order to keep the inflated position of the fish, the tough skin until it is fully expanded using either compressed air or inflated balloon. Drying is done in a warm dry spot out of the sunlight so the colors don’t fade. The processors are keen to keep the original teeth and jaws attached to the skin while the original eyes could be replaced by fake fish eyes. Gambia artisanal fishery – Hook and line fishing

Credit: Peter K Mendy (Gambia)

The photos show a typical fishing boat in Gambia artisanal fishery. Hook and line fishing is used when fishing of large value species like; giant African threadfin, and Barracuda is targeted. Because of the warm climate, fishermen normally carry along those boxes and ice with them when going fishing to avoid a means to reduce post-harvest losses due to spoilage.

Fouling and anti-fouling practices

Fouling is the growth of barnacles, weed, and other water life on the submersed hull of the boat. The colonization of fouling organisms on the boat hull adversely affect the sailing boat or ship in several ways including reducing its speed and durability especially when marine borers colonize wooden boats and dhows. Moreover, fouled ships act as biological belts that carry marine organisms from one location to another. Fouling accumulates on the exterior underwater surfaces of the vessel throughout the period the ship remains in water.

In order to reduce the fouling problems, ship owners often carry out some practices known collectively anti-fouling practices which could range from the periodic dry-docking the ship to remove the marine growth from the hull before applying the new coats of antifoul paint.

The antifouling paints vary in regard their effectiveness and environmental concerns. In general, copper-based tin-based paints have been used for anti-fouling. In fact, paints containing tin such as tributyltin (TBT) were highly effective and have been widely used before its banning due to its toxic effects on marine life. For example, large Tiger Shark is targeted because of their enormous livers.

In several fishing communities, fishermen discovered long time ago the effectiveness of shark liver oil in limiting the growth of marine fouling organisms as well as in discouraging marine wood borers. The adoption of the use of shark oil goes mainly to its availability to shark fishermen as well as to its low cost. The liver size and so the oil contents vary among shark species. Sun-warming and/or cooking (boiling) are means which are adopted to extract oil from shark livers before straining it before use.

The barrels shown in the photo are filled with prepared shark liver oil produced in a shark processing plant in the Sultanate of Oman whereas the owners of wooden fishing boats are the main clients of this oil.
