Outlook of milkfish, (Chanos chanos) farming in the Phillipines

Credit: Evelyn C. Ame (Philippines)

The present growth rate of  milkfish, Chanos chanos is expected to be maintained. This is due to increasing use of sea cages and sea pens for its culture.  The growing popularity of value added products of milkfish like de-boned and smoked forms and their export potentials will help maintain the current growth pattern.  Moreover, the emergence of large commercial milkfish hatcheries is a positive development which can give milkfish industry the extra needed push.

Especies Exoticas Invasoras en Honduras (in Spanish)

Credit: Carolina Cardona (Honduras)

Culture and consumption of giant gourami, Osphronemus goramy in Indonesia

Photos’ credit: Anna Jamil (Indonesia)                   Description: Anna Jamil and Abdel Rahman El Gamal

The giant gourami, Osphronemus goramy can be easily grown in variety of systems and on variety of feed sources. In Indonesia, giant gourami is cultured in ponds and cages. Being a herbivore, the species can be fed on soft leaves of plants as well as on pelleted feed.

Giant gourami can be bred naturally and this makes the species a good candidate to be bred by small-scale farmers.

The consumer preference and delicious taste of giant gourami as well as its high market value make up for the relatively low growth rate of the species.

Many restaurants in Indonesia serve delicious dishes of giant gourami; mainly fried or cooked.
