Costs and benefits arising from the establishment of maritime zones in the Mediterranean Sea

These reports belong for a study which was funded by the European Union. The project “Costs and benefits arising from the establishment of maritime zones in the Mediterranean Sea (MARE/2010/ 5)” had an overall objective of shedding light on the costs and benefits of establishing maritime zones in the Mediterranean Sea, by: 1) Identifying the existing maritime zones established in the Mediterranean Sea, including protected areas falling within such zones and/or on the High Seas, their related rights and obligations, the impact on economic activities carried out therein, together with environmental and social considerations. 2)  Identifying the potentialities and challenges to further maritime zone establishment in the Mediterranean Sea and its sub-regions, and developing scenarios as appropriate, taking into account the current status as a point of departure. 3) In turn, qualifying and quantifying to the greatest extent possible the direct and indirect costs and benefits of maritime zone establishment, for both existing and potential zones/scenarios, also in the light of national, regional, EU and international policy goals, legislation and agreements.

Cage farming of tilapia in Lake Victoria (Uganda) – Video

Because of the declining of fish harvest in Lake Victoria, means for boosting the fish harvest in the lake has been explored.  The adoption of cage fish farming seemed the practical option to adopt. Early in 2012, under the government of Uganda – China Friendship Agriculture Technology Centre, a three-year pilot cage fish farming project has been initiated.

The National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NaFIRRI) through its headquarter in Jinja is in charge of the pilot cage project through which NAFIRRI is encouraging the development of cage culture in Lake Victoria through offering technical package that includes a  free training for those interested in cage farming. The video has been taken at the cage pilot project at NaFIRRI, Jinja and shows the construction of cages that are mainly made of metal frames, floats, netting and feeders. The initial outcomes show that the stocked tilapia fingerlings reach their marketable size and hence harvested at after six to eight months.

Cage culture of red tilapia in Colombia

Cage aquaculture in Colombia produced 23,366 tons in 2010 representing about 34.5% of total Colombian aquaculture in that year (67,679 tons). Tilapia culture – in particular red tilapia- represents about 83% of total tilapia aquaculture in Colombia (cages and ponds). In the same time, tilapia dominates total cage aquaculture as represented by 97% (22,593 tons) and followed -with a large distance- by trout (2%) leaving negligible quantity to other species. Tilapia cages flourish in “Huila” province (97%) followed by 2.9% in “Tolima” leaving minor quantities in “Santander” and “Antioquia”.

Establishment of small-scale fish hatcheries in SriLanka

The annual requirement of fish fingerlings for Mahaweli system H is about 2.5 million. The two operating hatcheries target to supply the requirement of fingerlings. The two hatcheries are maintained by two farmer groups at Pahalahalmillewa and meegalewa block. The annual fingerling production of the two hatcheries is about two millions.

Fish farmer training in SriLanka

The photos show examples of farmer training in a given province in SriLanka. The training aims to improve the production as well as the quality of fish produced through various aquaculture systems. A large number of farmers have been trained on various fish farming technologies including cage fish farming, fish breeding, integrated fish farming and culture of ornamental fish. Some of the activities shown in the photos represent some demonstrations which have been highlighted in the training programs.

Culture of ornamental fish in SriLanka

There are 32 ornamental fish farmers in Mahaweli system H whereas a number of farmers perform fish and plant farming. Some farmers are involved in fish breeding and marketing. There are formal (governmental) efforts in farmer training as well as coordinating with investors and other institution such as fish exporters, equipment sellers, banks…ect). The photos show an Ornamental fish stall at Tambuttegama, Mahaweli system H while the second photo shows ornamental plants in a ground pond.

Fish stocking in water tanks in Mahaweli system, SriLanka

There are 96 water tanks in Mahaweli system whereas about 1200 fishermen operating in these tanks through fisheries societies. In order to support fishery activity in these tanks, the stocking of fish is performed annually whereas several millions of carps and tilapia fingerlings have been introduced in the tanks since launching the program.

One of the photos shows the release of fish fingerlings in Nallachchiya tank while the second photo shows fish release Katiyawa tank; both tanks belong to Mahaweli system.

Artificial reproduction of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) in Burundi

The photos show most of the artificial spawning of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) as carried out in Kunagura Ubworozi (Burundi). The typical practices of artificial catfish –whether shown in the photos or not- include the selection of broodstock, administration of the pituitary gland extract, ovulation and egg fertilization, incubation and hatching.
