Farming of meagre “Argyrosomus regius” in Egypt – Video

Credit for the video/information: Sherif Sadek                                            Description: Abdel Rahman El Gamal

The video shows some of pond management of “Meagre” (Argyrosomus regius), in Egypt especially feeding and harvesting. There is a growing interest in the commercial farming of meagre especially in the Dibah Triangle Zone in Egypt. This area is located between Damietta and Port Said.

The growing interest in meagre farming matches the high demand on this species whether for local market or for export. The species characteristics especially its meat quality (tasty flesh with no bones), and high growth rate support the interest in farming meagre. Moreover, the possibility of farming meagre in wide range of salinity is considered an important factor to be considered.

The farming of meagre depends on collected fry/juveniles from the natural fishery resources along the Nile delta by the Mediterranean coast.

The video presented the feeding process in a meagre fish pond. In the present, trash fish and small shrimp are the principal feed in meagre fish ponds. When meagre fingerlings are stocked at a rate of 1 to 2 fingerlings/m3, the production of about 5-7 tons could be produced of meagre with about 1.25 – 2.0 kg as an average size during a 16-month growing season.

Applications of squash technique in sex determination in fish

This 2-slide bite presents the squash technique and its use in sex determination in fish. Examples are given such as sex reversal and progeny testing in tilapia. The same is true in situations whereas the sex of juvenile fish of more  species cannot be determined based on fish morphology. The bite also includes the procedures of applying this technology.

An aquaponic project in Egypt – (Video)

Clip and information: Ashraf Gouda (Egypt)                                                 Description: Abdel Rahman El Gamal

The attached file shows the construction and management of the project components. This slide show reflects the operation of the first year of the project whereas more species of fish and plant crops have been screened for testing the compatibility, performance and economics of integrated organisms. In regard to fish, the tested species included Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), African catfish (Clarias gariepinus), mullet (Mugil sp.), freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), and freshwater mussels. Plant crops included cucumber, tomatoes, eggplants, green pepper, and hot pepper. Based on the outcomes of the screening, focusing on the optimum match and compatibility between aquatic and agricultural crops would be adopted. The infrastructures whether green houses and tanks are shown in the slide show.

Integrated aquaculture – agriculture project in Gaza (Palestine)

Credit: Masoud Keshta (Palestine)

The integration concept has been found optimum for aquaculture project in Gaza especially when water scarcity is considered. Field experience showed that the agriculture component in this integrated system includes vegetables (e.g. tomato, eggplant, and sweet potatoes), horticulture such as date palm, guava or olive trees.

Fish productivity in the aquaculture project is about 5-6 kg/m3. Fish produced from fish pools sell their harvest –which is mainly tilapia- either to fish traders or directly to consumers and of course the households consume part of the harvest.

Promotion of aquaculture in Gaza strip (Palestine)

Credit: Masoud Keshta (Palestine)

As the shortage in fish supply in Gaza strip is obvious, efforts have been spent to promote aquaculture in Gaza. The scarcity of water has been highly considered in the choice of aquaculture system to promote. The national authorities in partnership with international programs are supporting the current aquaculture project that is supported by Belgium and implemented by FAO. The project provides the capacity building for teams working in the project and provides also the whole cost of infrastructure (fish pools) and production inputs such as feed and fry. The photo shows the training provided to beneficiaries as well as the distribution of feed to aquaculture tanks.

Fishery practices in Lake Nasser (Egypt)

The two photos show a common fishing practices in Lake Nasser. As seen in the photos, two fishermen operates this non-motorized fishing boat. Fishermen set the fishing seine in the place and position which they expect the best based on their experience. One of the fishermen start to beat water surface with an iron rod to direct fish towards the seine and so ensure a better catch. The second photo shows the catch of this boat of tilapia which is the main catch of the lake.

Crocodile populations in Lake Nasser (Egypt)

Photo credit: Glenda Vélez Calabria (Colombia) and David Mendoza Ramirez (Peru)

Description: Abdel Rahman El Gamal

Crocodiles in Lake Nasser are protected by environmental laws. There are conflicting opinions in regard to lake crocodiles. Fishery stakeholders believe that crocodiles consume large quantities of fish and far important is the potential risk which crocodiles can cause to fishermen community in the lake. On the other hand and based on assessment surveys done by protected zones departments, it is believed that the crocodile populations are still within the safe limits and hence no control action has been taken yet except monitoring. Some of the small or baby crocodiles may come into fishing nets and in such case, they should be released back to water; Failing to do so, such incidence is considered a violation.

Wholesale fish market in Kafr El Sheikh, Egypt

Credit of the general photo: David Sykora (Paraguay)        Credit for the 2 other photos: Salah-eddine Hamdani (Morocco) Description: Abdel Rahman El Gamal

The wholesale fish market in Kafr El Sheikh has been established to serve the fish trade in the governorate especially about 52% of farmed fish in Egypt is produced in Kafr El Sheikh (2009 statistics). As expected and because tilapia represented about 2/3 of total aquaculture production in 2009, tilapia is the dominant group of fish in the market. Smaller quantities of other species whether belong to capture fishery or from aquaculture. Auctioning is the system practiced in the market whereas 3% is deducted from the sale transaction for providing the market service. Fish traded in this market is sold either locally in Kafr El Sheikh, in nearby governorates or in large cities such as Cairo, Alexandria or anywhere in Egypt based on demand whether for fish in general or for particular species.
